An Electronic Press Kit? So, you’re an artist trying to make waves in this overcrowded music ocean? Then listen up, because it’s time we had a serious talk about your so-called “professionalism.”

As a music journalist who’s spent way too many nights banging my head against the wall, I’m beyond fed up with artists who can’t get their act together. You’d think in this digital age, folks would know what a press release is—or hell, at least have one. But no. Instead, I’m sifting through your fragmented social media profiles, hunting for a decent bio or a high-res image that doesn’t look like it was shot on a potato. And don’t even get me started on album artwork. Industry standard for album art is 3000 x 3000 resolution, but here I am, chasing you down for something that won’t pixelate on the front page.

Enough is enough.

If you’re serious about your music career—and I mean dead serious—it’s time to get your shit together and create an Electronic Press Kit (EPK)—see here for exmples. Here’s why you can’t afford to ignore this any longer.

First Impressions Matter—Don’t Blow It

Your EPK is your handshake, your business card, your opener. It’s what industry professionals see before they decide whether you’re worth their time.

A well-crafted EPK screams professionalism and shows you’re not just another wannabe cluttering up inboxes. It cuts through the noise and puts you front and center, exactly where you need to be to get noticed. And while you don’t have to splash out for a crazy nice EPK in every single case, I ask you this: would you rather chance it, or put a little bit of extra effort in for a lot of return?

Your choice, my dude.

The One-Stop Shop for All Things You

Consider your Electronic Press Kit the ultimate hub for everything that makes you, you. It’s got:

  • A Kick-Ass Bio: Your story, your journey, no fluff. This can come in several parts: start with your elevator pitch. Then include your boiler plate. And then you can include a longer bio. The last one should maybe be included in an accordion. If none of that made sense to you, god help you.
  • High-Quality Photos: Professional shots that WOW people—not some blurry selfie. Remember: music is a visual medium. What’s that you say? It’s not?? Well then enjoy the lifetime of obscurity, sweetheart.
  • Streaming Embeds: I can’t believe I have to say this but: PUT YOUR MUSIC ON YOUR EPK! And put all the major ones: Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, and SoundCloud. If the journo covering you can’t make it work with all that, then they need to hit the bricks anyway.
  • Video Content: Live performances or music videos that prove you can own a stage. But don’t just add filler – put your very best, the one that’s most likely to get someone moister than an oyster about you. Stop playing around, and shoot your best shot here.
  • Press and Reviews: Any buzz you’ve already generated—time to show and share it. This is where it comes in very f’ing handy.
  • Upcoming Gigs or Releases: Keep everyone in the loop about what’s next. If you’ve already got everything in Bandsintown or similar service, consider embedding it on the page.
  • Contact Info: Make it easy for people to reach out. Don’t play hard to get. And for the love of god, get a decent email address that’s specific to your band.

Stop making people dig around to find out who you are. Hand it to them on a silver platter.

Make Life Easier—for Everyone

You know what’s a surefire way to piss off a promoter or journalist? Make them jump through hoops to book you or feature you. An EPK streamlines the whole damn process. All the info they need is right there, saving time for both of you. In this fast-paced industry, efficiency isn’t just appreciated—it’s expected. Don’t be the bottleneck.

Branding Isn’t Just for Corporations

Think branding is some corporate sell-out move? Get over yourself. Your brand is your identity in the music world. A solid EPK helps you present a consistent image that sets you apart from the sea of artists all vying for the same spotlight. Show that you’re not just a talented musician but also a savvy professional who gets how the game is played.

Versatility Equals Opportunity

An Electronic Press Kit isn’t a one-trick pony. Use it to:

  • Book More Gigs: Give venues and promoters all the reasons to say “hell yeah” to you.
  • Hype Up New Releases: Create buzz before your music drops.
  • Engage the Press: Make it stupid easy for journalists and bloggers to feature you.
  • Attract Industry Bigwigs: Managers, labels—they’re all fair game when you present yourself right.

Being accessible is key. An EPK puts you on the global stage, ready for anyone, anywhere, to discover you.

Reflect, Adapt, Grow

Creating an EPK isn’t just about packaging—it’s a reality check. It forces you to look in the mirror and define who you are as an artist. What’s your message? What’s your mission? And as you evolve, so should your EPK. Keep it updated to show your growth and keep the momentum going.

Bottom Line: If you’re not using an Electronic Press Kit, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. It’s not just a fancy add-on; it’s a necessity. So stop making excuses, stop wasting opportunities, and start taking your career seriously. Get your EPK together and let the world know you’re not here to play—you’re here to dominate.

Ready to rise above the noise? Then what the hell are you waiting for? Get on it.
